Behind the scenes of "Manicure" MV

This is a translation of a post from Guckkasten's Cyworld community.

Original post: http://club.cyworld.com/ClubV1/Home.cy/52172895
Original post date: 2011.09.28 12:09
Author: Guckkasten (i.e. manager of the community)

Everyone is keep asking..
It's been a while since the 1st album's release!
When are they going to release the 2nd one!

If you recall, Guckkasten had released an EP, last December.

The EP with 'Manicure' and 'Scarlet Field'.

So, to ease your waitings
we'd like to release some photos taken during the filming of Manicure's music video

Gwang-gil, our handsome drummer.

But during the breaks....

...

..

A couple of hwatu in his hand and the picture would be complete.

(Hwatu is Korean playing card decks. The author is saying that Gwang-gil looks like a gambler.)

The silent Gyo played his guitar the way as he usually does

...

..

Then striked a pose for a cool pic..

and showed off his cuteness.

Gribouill's menacing gaze in Manicure's music video

was created through this process..

Acting.. performing..
Totally hectic..

Hence the exhaustion...

During the shoot of another version of 'Manicure' MV (undisclosed)
It kinda.. looked like this.

Kibang maintained that status, that pose, and that face
all throughout the music video shoot....

...

So there aren't that many photos of him

...

...

All members took pains
wearing those black clothes
and filming amongst the ruins where chalky dust flied everywhere.

All in all, the video shoot went well.

Last but not least,

we'd like to put a smile on your face.

The free-and-easy Mr Guckkasten and lofty Madamme Guckkasten.

* 20 Questions & Answers *

01. You are?? (e.g. name, age, job, hobby, hometown, etc. ~)
and photo. (If you don't want to include this, then it's ok~!)

Name: Jung-gil Lee
Age: 27
Job: Guckkasten drummer
Hobby: Motorcycle, reading, writing gibberish on notebooks, saying silly things
Hometown: The place I lived longest is Nowon at the far right side on the northern part of Seoul.. 3rd last station from the last stop of Line 4.

02. How would you describe yourself as an object?

Cloud -- they swim around in a crystal clear sea-like sky and take thousands of forms. I love clouds because they are high up, liberally express their shapes, and you can just feel the freshness, elegance, magnificence, beauty.. I'd like to think I am like a cloud because I liked them since I was young? It is said that you get to be alike the target you admire~

Oh, and I also talk a lot of gibberish~ keke;
(The direct translation of Jung-gil's last sentence would be "talk of catching a cloud", which is a common Korean phrase that describes talk of gibberish or something unrealistic.)

03. Reason for joining this Guckkasten club?

I am a member

04. Guckkasten’s music is ( Abraxas ).
< Finish the sentence; e.g. perverted >

05. Your favorite music style? and musicians?

I like everything that shows a musician's own style. Irrespective of genre, from old music to today's music.

If I must say so, I very much respect Nirvana and Radiohead, and these days I am suddenly into "Pretty handsome awkward" by "The Used"~!!!

I even bought music for mini-home~!!^_^
(Cyworld provided each users 'mini-home', a personal homepage for each user. The users paid a small sum of cyber-money to buy items and music source.)

06. Your favorite paintings or artists? and reason?

I do not take much interest in paintings, but Van Gogh just comes to mind whenever an artist is mentioned. Gribouill has a biography on Van Gogh, and I am reminded of this because I like his passion, his will, and his charisma on expression that even overcomes fear of death. The funny thing is, although I know nothing about art, I can feel his paintings are extraordinary and that they are powerful!!

I realized that on art and creativity, the artist's mind is more important than expression techniques. The mind is the fundamental, and expression technique will nourish on this basis. If there is a mind to express something ardently, a masterpiece will be made through many trials and errors.

Van Gogh was able to create artworks like '14 Sunflowers' and 'The Starry Night' after countless trials and errors.

07. Your favorite book? and reason?

'Demian' by Hermann Hesse. My teenage years were a lot like that of Sinclair's. No, really, I though the writer was talking about me.

08. Your life motto?

Carpe diem.

09. What is love?

A blind sacrifice.

10. What is human?

A being that carries a fate of having to be Dionysus-like..

11. What do you trust?

Abraxas

12. Does equality exist in this world?

Equality exists. But even with just a small percentage, the weight of anger and hatred coming from inequality are greater than the happiness from equality.

But the ironical thing is, such anger and hatred can fuel one's rocket to happiness. Hmm...

13. The most curious thing in the world?

True nature of the universe

14. What is the dirtiest?

God's intrusion on fortune's fickle wheel

15. What is the cleanest?

Bruna (my dog, a shepherd)

16. Best lyric in Guckkasten music? and why?

Hmm... what could it be?

17. Best single of Guckkasten? and why?

Hmm... really, what could it be? keke;;

18. The most curious thing on Guckkasten?

.

19. The most attractive part about Guckkasten’s music?

Fresh charisma??

20. 3 things you want from Guckkasten

                                            1. Work hard

                                            2. Do well

A tanslation of interview with Jeonju City.
Original post link: http://jeonju.go.kr/ebook/www/ebook/201609/e-201609.html#p=24

“Passion of Jeonju Fortress, We will tell the world with our voice

‘Guckkasten’, the most popular band at this age have come to Jeonju Fortress. They have been appointed as an ambassador for Jeonju City, which will hold FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2017. The unique name, Guckkasten, stands for ‘Chinese-style kaleidoscope’. The band will be promoting the city of Jeonju with their magnificent passion, just like the splendid and colourful images shown inside a kaleidoscope,

You have become extremely popular with the national tours and with the character ‘Music Captain’ in the TV show, King of the Masked Singers. Tell us what you are up to now.

We have been meeting many people through national tour concerts. We are also working hard in making music as well. It is true that we are busy, but we are full of energy because of the people that welcome us wherever we go. We will be seeing you a lot more through more concerts and other various contents.

We understand you have special relation with Jenju. What is your impression on this city?

We’ve been keeping close relationship with Jeonju by participating in various festivals, including Jeonju International Sori Festival in 2014. The vocal, Hyunwoo Ha, spent his childhood in Jeonju, so the city means a lot to Guckkasten. Hyunwoo always speaks of Jeonju’s sky that he saw in his early years, so we associate the colour blue with Jenju, like that of blue sky.

Could we ask you for a word of resolution before you start working as the ambassador of Jeonju City for FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2017?

We see Jeonju as a charming city that holds both serenity and passion. Guckkasten pursues variety in our music, and we think Jeonju and our band shares having such diverse features. We would like to promote these attractions that Jeonju have to as many people as possible. As this city holds a lot of memories for us, we will take responsibilities and work passionately.

Jeonju is especially passionate about football and World Cup, as it is also called ‘Jeonju Fortress’. What is your opinion on Jeonju’s culture and passion on football?

We heard that Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors are writing new history by having record of all wins. We understand that Jeonbuk holds the record of having the most series of victories, the most series of goals, the most series of no losing point, and the most series of undefeated games. The citizens of Jeonju are participating and supporting the games, right? We really wish to be part of Jeonbuk team’s great history, as they are the best football team in K-League.

Please leave a word of support for FIFA U-20 World Cup that will be held at Jeonju in 2017, and a message for the citizens of Jeonju.

We have high expectations for the opening match of FIFA U-20 World Cup. It is exciting to think of young players under 20 fervently playing for the country. We hope the citizens of Jeonju would enjoy this festival as there will be many great matches as well as the opening game. We also believe this would give chance for other football fans to enjoy this city. We will also be concentrating on our music careers with the support of Jeonju. We would like thank the people in Jeonju. Love you all!

The existence is still
Faded in time are
Paradox of life
Fall of senses-

Open thine eyes wider
and
Tilt thy gaze upside down
Do you see death?

Hand in hand are darkness and light
On the boundary line
They dance

Even before the music flows
I seek my dance partner
“Pray, take my hand”

 Let us dance ourselves away!
When the music would die down
I cannot guarantee

The dance of ours is
The prayer of fear

The dance of ours is
The bona fide madness
The madness of thirst

About Guckkasten

This post is a translation of Hyunwoo Ha's post on Cyworld Club.
http://club.cyworld.com/guckkasten
(Original posting date: 2008.07.02 15:42)

1. Name of the Band

Guckkasten (국카스텐)

A word meaning "Chinese-style kaleidoscope"

Inspired from Hague's work "Art and fire", the band endeavors to express

their music as if watching psychedelic images hidden in an analogue art.

2. Members

*Gribouill

Part : Vocal

*Kyo

 Part : Guitar

*Gwang-gil (光吉)

 Part : Drums

* Kibang

Part : Bass

3. History

2000

Gribouill is walking down a street in Daejeon..

Gwang-gil, whom Gribouill has never met before, asks "Excuse me~ Are you into music?" while sucking an ice-cream.

Hence, by some twist of fate and with a moment's encounter, the two join a school band in Daejeon.

However, with musical conflicts with the other members, the two quit their college and leave for Seoul...

But with the loss of their will, Gwang-gil finds a job and Gribouill studies clothing...

2001

While Gribouill is working part-time at a gas station, he meets Jin-ah, whom he knew from high school

and for the first time, Jin-ah, Gwang-gil, and Gribouill get together.

And they decide to form a rock band.

Then.... they meet Kyo, who lives in Gangwondo and plays a guitar, through the internet.

There is no bassist....

So the guitarist Jin-ah changes his position to bassist

and for the first time, the band is formed.

Name of the band "New Unbalance".... ㅡ,.ㅡ;

For the first time, they make their own music and perform.

During this time, they meet In-Kyung, whom they met at the school band, and lures her to join the band.

2002

Perform in Hongdae area, scribble music... throw away... make again... throw away again

live like beggars and perform in shabby places.

Everything goes wrong and the will to do music is lost again...

The band goes on halt...

2003

Jin-ah, the bassist, senses discord between the members

and leaves the band.

And the other members force themselves to make the band again.

Name of the band "The C.O.M"

And finds a new bassist.

The members, who had no money to practice, eat, sleep, and to do whatever

just force and really force themselves to practice together at a music institute

make music, perform, work at construction sites... live miserably and make miserable music...

Then by some chance, the band wins Hidden Whiz at Ssamzie Rock Festival

and performs for the last time.

The band had already dismembered, as all grew sick of the laborious and miserable life they lived through every day.

2004

Gwang-gil gets into defense industry.

Gribouill goes to military service.

Kyo goes back to Gangwondo.

End of the much forced, irritating, and strenuous band life.

2005

.................................

2006

Gribouill is discharged from the military service in April and tries to learn pottery, but the president of a music institute helps him.

Kyo gets back in touch and they meet again.

The members that only had long time relationship and nothing else, decide to form the band again

Gribouill and Kyo make music for 7 months in Gangwondo.

2007

In April, Gwang-gil re-joins the band after leaving the factory.

And they name the band.

"Guckkasten"

And they perform.

In mid August, a guitarist named Gyun-yoo, decides to join Guckkasten as the bassist.

He starts from 24th August, the 3rd preliminary round for Ssamzie Sound Festival Hidden Whiz.

Makes earnings from delivery service with Gwang-gil at Gangwondo, makes music and performs together.

But decides to leave the band as he could not accept his role as the bassist.

Hence the three members perform as the band.

(Currently Jin-uck is in a band named Anti-Roman as a guitarist.)

2008

In March, the band escapes Gangwondo and moves to Seoul.

And nests in the photo studio of Jin-ah's wife. (Jin-ah is the former bassist of the band.)

And finds a studio for the band at Sadang.

And the man at Sadang studio volunteers to help in recording their music.

The recording starts from April.

And we move our nest to Nacksungdae. (Near the studio.)

Then one day in June.....

Young "Kibang", who has 6 years of mischief history with the band members, give a call.

And after long years of playing-hard-to-get, he joins us, starting from EBS Sympathy performance.

The band has been performing hard for the past 12 months and is still on going ever since.
